Small Changes Can Yield Big Results
June 2007
As June draws to a close I wanted to higlight some of the last four weeks great achievements.
1) Toys for Towns Appeal: Thank you to everyone who donated good quality toys and to Harry from Harry’s Toys, Alexandria for his generous gesture. The Toys for Towns appeal was a huge success and I hope the appeal will bring some smiles to little faces in both the drought and now flood ravaged areas of NSW. Ironically the timing of the project was excellent as Newcastle and the Hunter Valley experienced extreme storms, resulting in massive flooding and severe property damage. I hope the irony was not lost on everyone of the Pasha Bulka being washed aground.
2) The Mosman Launch was a huge success, with turnout exceeding expectations of 160 people. I personally want to thank all the Mosman women that worked so hard to make the event excellent. Please read WFCA Mosman’s Comment.
3) Liane Rossler’s Carbon Reduction Story: Liane has kindly provided us with the story of all the changes she has made at home and to Dinosaur Designs. This is another great story of inspirational changes that we can all embrace, some are small and some are big, but they all show how we as individuals can all make a difference.
Please read Liane’s Story.
4) Small changes can yield BIG results: How turning off your computer at home and at work can really make a difference. A recent study has shown that leaving computers on at work over night is costing American business US$1.7bn in energy costs and produces 14.4million tons of CO2 which is equivalent to 2.5 million cars. See greenercomputing.com This research clearly reflects that simple measures like turning off computers and for that matter taking appliances off stand by, can make a difference in reducing CO2 emissions and electricity costs. With retail electricity prices on the rise, now is as good a time as any to start becoming more energy efficient at home, at the school and in the office.
5) Expert’s Comments:I have also published some great articles onto the Climate Change page that discuss the Prime Minister’s Proposed Emissions Trading Scheme from Ian Dunlop. Ian Dunlop was formerly a senior international oil, gas and coal industry executive. He chaired the Australian Coal Association in 1987-1988, chaired the Australian Greenhouse Office Experts Group on Emissions Trading from 1998-2000 and was CEO of the Australian Institute of Company Directors from 1997-2001.
