We have the clean solutions to counter the Greenhouse Effect…
April 2007
As April draws to a close a want to highlight a number of major events and exciting topics. See below for WFCA Mosman launch, Dr Mark Diesendorf’s expert opinion on clean solutions to the greenhouse problem and his book launch, as well as founder member Alex Duchen’s story of how to reduce the household’s footprint. As the Climate Change debate gathers momentum I am sure that you will all agree that even if there is a remote possibility that human activity is not the sole cause of heating the planet, which skeptics still argue, then what is so wrong about cleaning up the quality of the air we breath. Moreover the insidious nature of Climate Change means waiting to see could make it all too late to arrest the most dangerous and threatening impacts. We need positive policy frameworks now to achieve emission target reductions of 30% by 2020 and 80-90% by 2050. We have the solutions and they do not lie in waiting 20 or so years for so called Clean Coal and nuclear to be developed. Like Dr Mark Diesendorf I would strongly argue that we have the positive solutions, what we don’t have is political will from either of the major parties. However I hope the attached pieces from Mark and Alex will show everyone that we all can make changes at home, and become part of changing the way we generate energy.
Also a number of important conferences and presentations have been uploaded on to our events page. Please see www.wfca.org.au/events.html
1) WFCA is very proud to be officially launching the Mosman branch on June 15th. I have had the pleasure of meeting a wonderful group of highly motivated and intelligent women that are taking on the challenge of cooling Mosman.

2) I have great pleasure in welcoming our expert guest author this month, Dr Mark Diesendorf who has not only written a piece on renewable solutions to clean energy , he is also launching his new book "Greenhouse Solutions with Sustainable Energy". The launch will be marked by a free public symposium on "Greenhouse Solutions" at UNSW. It will be held on Tuesday 22 May, 5.30-7.55 pm, in Main Theatre G04, New Law Building, UNSW Kensington. Speakers will be Drs Iain MacGill and Muriel Watt from the Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (CEEM) and Frank Muller and myself from the Institute of Environmental Studies (IES). Robyn Williams from the ABC will chair.
